Artist Statement

Nairobi wasn’t just a backdrop for me, it was my story. After graduating from Kenyatta University in 2016, I began capturing the city’s iconic landmarks through paint. These weren’t simply depictions; they were expressions of childhood memories, interwoven with vibrant colors and dynamic compositions.

Yet, the canvas soon shifted as my focus turned to the natural world. Witnessing the growing threat to wildlife and its ripple effects on our urban lives – climate change, water scarcity – ignited a new urgency in my art. Watercolors, oils, and acrylics now dance across my canvases, richly layered yet infused with a sense of imminent danger. Faint lines sketch animals against vibrant abstracts, a stark contrast highlighting their fragility.

But my exploration goes beyond the visible. Textures, colors, emotions, shadows, and relationships – these elements interweave, creating a mood that delves deeper. Each layer of paint, each brushstroke, becomes a metaphor for the human psyche, processing the endless stream of information, ideas, and feelings that reside beneath the surface. My art is an invitation to uncover these layers, to explore the complexities within ourselves and the world around us.
